It’s not often that a trailer release alone is enough to warrant a post here, but World Of Goo 2 should be bigger on everyone’s radar. A sequel to one of the best games ever made should be cause for an international holiday. It’s set to release this Friday, August 2, and the new trailer below will flood your tower with a glimpse of the enigmatic tower building found within.
The premise of World Of Goo is simple enough. Goo balls slide through the levels and you can pick them up. Hold them close to other blob balls and they form connecting beams, securing them in place. This allows you to build towers towards a level exit, and unused goos can climb the tower and escape. They are Lemmings with a physics twist from 2008.
What makes World Of Goo a classic is that on top of such a simple premise, each level introduces a delightful surprise: new types of goo, new obstacles, new settings, and so on. I remember people crowding around my monitor when I played it in the office in 2008 applaud during cutscenes at the end of the level, overwhelmed by what an explosive and coherent act of imagination the whole thing was. The prototypical example of an indie game exploring a good idea to its full potential.
Which, if you believe the argument, makes it hard to follow. I would be concerned about World Of Goo 2’s ability to find as many inventions as the original if sixteen years hadn’t passed. Since it’s been so long, I’m just glad there’s more of it, and if it repeats some ideas and ends up being a lesser game then who cares, I’d still enjoy playing it.
August 2. I think Brendy ignored the review.
