You can stop arguing about where The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom fit on the timeline, as Nintendo has arranged.
There are a number of Zelda games that are very clearly connected in various ways, with titles like Majora’s Mask clearly being a sequel to Ocarina of Time, and A Link to the Past, A Link Between Worlds and Link’s Awakening all sharing similar features . Link and Zelda. But for the most part, despite Nintendo canonizing it with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia in 2011, the timeline isn’t actually that important. It’s fun to think about the ways in which the games’ respective histories have influenced each other, but it’s not that important – even still, people have argued about where Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom would be on said timeline can fit. As it turns out, they’re nowhere.

As reported by VooksNintendo seems to have shared a new look at Zelda’s history during Nintendo Live 2024 in Sydney, where you can clearly see that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are cut off from the rest. There’s not even a boundary between them, which suggests they’re not all that connected themselves, and considering Tears of the Kingdom barely acknowledges Breath of the Wild, that’s fair.

Ever since Breath of the Wild came out in 2017, fans have been wondering where it would fit in, given the various references to almost all of the games in the games’ main timelines. Tears of the Kingdom didn’t make things that clear either, but if you’re a lorehead who gets off on this sort of thing, you at least have your answer, even if it might be frustrating or disappointing for some of you. .
