Wildly immoral tinseltown builder Hollywood Animal hits early access in January 2025

I missed my chance to write about Hollywood Animal when a certain Nic Reuben swooped in as a rival showbiz talent scout and wrested the summer Steam Fest demo from under my nose, taking advantage of the fact that I was stranded in an airport at the time. I wrote instead about a very rude “tribute” to the Minesweeper. Hopefully that was for the best.

Anyway, it’s finally my chance at a bite at the apple, because developers Weappy Wholesome just gave their slice of throwback La La Land an early access release date: January 16, 2025. To celebrate, they’ve also released a new and free long version published trailer. Grab a whiskey and a cigar and get started.

As you might guess from the title and my sly intro allusions, Hollywood Animal is a tycoon game where you set up your own film studio at the dawn of sound cinema. You buy and furnish buildings such as the script and post-production departments, hire some actors, writers, producers and other accomplices and get to work generating a little stardust.

It’s all very involved, and not just at the level of production technical details. You can send private investigators to collect dirt on your whiniest employees, and bribe the mayor to overlook your many, many crimes. You can perfectly time and market the release of your films after studying your competitor’s projects, or simply ask the mafia to “clear the calendar”. This is the “golden age” of Hollywood in the sense that it is shiny, cold, and harsh and people will kill for it.

Nic may be a dirty, evil thief, but his demo article is a lot of fun. “Each film is judged on both ‘audience approval’ and ‘artistic appeal,’” he noted. “This may seem like an unnecessarily strict binary, but remember, this was before Boss Baby, so no one knew you could still master both.”

The developers call it “a box of spiders disguised as a tycoon game”. Well done, whoever came up with that phrase. I wish it was me. If you need any more convincing, there’s a new demo coming in December.
