Reigning defending champions Real Madrid and RCD Mallorca are looking to secure a final spot in the Supercopa de Espana when they meet at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah on Thursday. Carlo Ancelotti’s men defend La Liga champions as the Balearic Islands earned their place in Saudi Arabia after finishing runners-up in the Copa del Rey. Los Blancos won the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in Qatar last month and started 2025 with a narrow victory in Valencia before going on to advance past Deportiva Minera in this edition of the Copa del Rey. Ral have progressed to each of their last three Spanish Super Cup semi-finals since 2021, when they lost to last four team Athletic Club.
Mallorca are taking part in the Supercopa de Espana after reaching the final of the Copa del Rey last year, but there will be no repeat having already fallen to minnows Pontevedra in the current edition. Athletic Club managed to beat the penalty shootout and book their place in Saudi Arabia, which denied Los Piratas a heroic success. Mallorca have played in the Spanish Super Cup twice before, beating Barcelona 3-1 over two legs in 1998, as well as a defeat to Real in 2003. They have lost three of their last five competitive matches, which is not ideal for this match, but they did draw against Son Moix earlier this season, which would be enough for at least extra time and possibly even penalties.

Real fought back to beat Valencia despite being down to ten men after Vinicius Junior’s red card, thanks to goals from the late Luka Modric and Jude Bellingham. Ancelotti’s men now top La Liga, two points ahead of Atletico Madrid and five ahead of third-placed Barca, although Atleti still have a game in hand. Although Mallorca are the lowest ranked side in this edition of the Spanish Super Cup, Jagoba Arrasate’s men sit sixth in La Liga and are currently challenging for Europe. The Copa del Rey may be over, but Athletic Club are in fourth place and currently only six points ahead.

Real: Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao remain absent, while David Alaba is not quite ready to play despite being in the official squad. Jesus Vallejo was left out after missing the Copa del Rey win over Minera with an injury, while Vini Jr. will be suspended from La Liga after playing in the Supercopa de España this week. Kylian Mbappe should make his first appearance in the Spanish Super Cup with thirteen league goals to his name so far.
