On Thursday, Alex Morgan, the forward for the US women’s national team, announced on Sunday that she will retire from football effective Sunday when the San Diego Wave hosts the North Carolina Courage Biggest+ and CBS Sports Golazo Network. Morgan is one of the most talented members of the USWNT ever with 123 goals in her 224 caps. The team is undefeated in the 86 matches in which she has scored a goal and Morgan also has two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles and an Olympic gold.

“I’m going to get to the point quickly,” she said on her social media on Thursday. “I am retiring and I have so much clarity about this decision, and I am so happy that I can finally tell you. It took a long time and this decision was not easy, but in the beginning of 2024 I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season I would play football. Football has been a part of me for 30 years, and it was one of the first things I ever loved, and I gave everything to this sport, and what I did for it got back was more than I could have ever imagined,” Morgan said in her farewell video.

But Morgan’s achievements extend far beyond the football field. She founded the Alex Morgan Foundation to create opportunities for women on and off the field, while also being a strong supporter of equal rights and other initiatives. Morgan’s work helped create the first ever anti-harassment policy in the NWSL in 2021.
