I think it’s safe to say that Trigger Happy Interactive’s upcoming survival horror Total Chaos is a bit of a palette change from their last offering: the frenetic, neon-drenched, chainsaw-legged Turbo Overkill. Yet we don’t often see psychological horror combined with ultra-violence, and anything that gives off a hint of Condemned: Criminal Origins has my attention.
Total Chaos started life as a popular one Doom 2 modand while I dare say that game’s limitations sell the atmosphere a little better than this much leaner update, I certainly trust Trigger Happy enough to get the most out of the new engine. The game takes place in New Oasis, a “once bustling miners’ haven” that is now decidedly not bustling or harbor-like.
The survival horror comes into play by having you gather your own makeshift weapons to face a selection of horrible things, including big spiders and guys wearing skull masks – the telltale sign of only the baddest guys. Maybe those are actually their real faces. I’m not yet aware of the guy’s depth of knowledge. Here are some features, via the Steam page:
- Immersive Atmosphere: Explore the nightmarish ruins of Fort Oasis in nine gripping chapters, each immersing you deeper into the oppressive, decaying world.
- Environmental Storytelling: Discover the island’s darkest secrets and confront your own fractured past through cryptic notes, haunting images and disturbing encounters.
- Crafting for Survival: Build and upgrade weapons using collected materials to stand a chance against the ruthless horrors that pursue you.
- Face nightmarish enemies: Engage in desperate battles against horrific creatures, each with their own deadly behavior and strategies.
- Resource Management: Navigate a deep inventory system where every item matters; your survival depends on careful choices and quick thinking.
The Steam page also has the word ‘Terrormare’ on it, which I won’t blame them for. Total Chaos is “coming soon.” I would say: “not fast enough!” but I don’t know how fast they mean, so that might be a lie. I’m not sure. I won’t risk it.
