Last week, Destiny 2 was publicly enjoyed by Forbes’ Paul Tassi wrote an article noting the similarities between The First Descendant’s in-game icons and those used by Bungie’s multiplayer looter shooter. Nexon has since contacted Tassi and said they are taking the concerns seriously and will make adjustments so that the visuals “clearly reflect the unique identity” of their Warframe-Destiny hybrid GaaS shooter.
“It’s pretty clear that if these weren’t taken directly from Destiny, they were copied almost exactly with those little additions or subtractions,” Tassi wrote in the first article, sharing several comparison images like the one below. Tassi also points out comparisons between weapons, enemies, some promotional art, and a skull icon.
Whether you think there’s any truth to these comparisons or not – although let’s face it, some of them are incredibly suspect – Nexon decided to reach out to Tassi themselves with an explanation. In short, it actually says: sorry about that, we will get to work on it right away.
“The First Descendant was developed as a shooter with a deep affection and respect for other games in the genre,” said Nexon. “Destiny 2, a globally renowned shooting game, is also personally admired and respected by the team, and has served as inspiration throughout the development process. We have taken the concerns raised seriously and decided to make adjustments to ensure that the similar visuals clearly reflect the unique identity of our game.”
I don’t really care for The First Descendant, but if Nexon goes back and draws mustaches and glasses on all the offensive icons, I’ll root for it until the day he dies. Despite my personal lack of enthusiasm to get involved with a new forever shooter right now, I chatted with Nexon about how they’ve designed their endgame to not rely on “meaningless DPS” or “spec stacking,” which is admirable .
