Matt Gaetz has come out as Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, reacting with joy late in the evening. That included Thursday’s audience on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which provided thunderous applause and cheers when Colbert announced the news.
“We have something to be thankful for because this afternoon Matt Gaetz withdrew as Trump’s nominee for attorney general,” Colbert said to cheers during his opening monologue. “Oh my goodness, isn’t that nice? That’s so nice. Thank you, dear turkey Jesus, Gobble bless you.
“As you know, Gates’ nomination has been opposed by many Republican senators, especially after two women alleged that Gaetz paid them for sex. Yesterday in the New York Times, they published a breakdown of Venmo transactions between Gaetz, his friends and dozens of women to show how the payments flowed between them. I think we all know what flowed between them. But you know what, just for the schnicks, let’s look at the graph.
‘There you go. It’s very simple. This card connects all the characters in the Matt Gaetz Skinematic universe.
“As you can see, Gates and his associates sent money to many little women in red shirts, as well as several mysterious top hats.
“The only possible conclusion is that Matt Gaetz paid to have sex with the Babadook.”
Gaetz had been a controversial choice from the start, especially as he promised to arm the Justice Department and carry out Trump’s plan to get revenge on his critics. But the far-right Republican was also investigated by a House ethics committee over sexual misconduct and other issues.
After Gaetz resigned from his seat in the House of Representatives to take over Trump’s administration, Republicans in the House of Representatives moved to block the report’s release. But details, like those Colbert mentioned in his monologue, began to leak. It appeared Gaetz would likely face an uphill battle in a confirmation process.
Thursday night’s edition of “Late Show” features guests such as House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Paramount+’s Jeffrey Wright with Showtime’s “The Agency.” Evie McGee Colbert was also scheduled to appear in a Thanksgiving edition of “First Drafts.”
