Berlin:
Several people were killed on Friday evening when a man randomly stabbed passers-by at a festival in the western German city of Solingen, Bild newspaper reported.
Bild said the event took place around 9:45 pm (1945 GMT) and at least three people were dead and several others were injured.
Witnesses said the perpetrator was at large, the newspaper added.
Local newspaper Solingen Tageblatt reported on its website that the attack took place at a festival celebrating the city’s 650th anniversary.
Local police said they could not comment yet.
According to local news reports, the stabbings took place at the Fronhof, a market square in the city where live bands played.
Solingen is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state in Germany and borders the Netherlands.
Fatal stabbings and shootings are relatively rare in Germany.
In June, a 29-year-old police officer died after being stabbed in the German city of Mannheim during an attack on a right-wing demonstration.
In 2021, a stabbing took place on a train, resulting in several injuries.
