Resident Evil Revelations update reportedly adds DRM to decade-old game, breaks it, then removes DRM – for now

The 11-year-old game Resident Evil Revelations recently released an update that apparently introduced DRM, only to quickly roll back the patch after player complaints that it was reportedly causing performance issues. However, Capcom isn’t giving up on its promise to tackle mods so easily.

The recent Resident Evil Revelations update caused a wave of comments on the Steam forums about apparent performance issues, including reduced framerate, stuttering and sudden drops, crashes and mods no longer working. (Thank you, Eurogamer.)

As players dug into the surprise patch, they seemed to find references to Enigma Protector, a piece of DRM software designed to stop the use of mods and tools like Cheat Engine.

The introduction of the anti-tampering tool follows comments from developers during an internal Capcom presentation last year that equated mods with cheats and expressed concerns that some mods are “offensive to public order and morality” and damage the company’s reputation. could tarnish the company – a concern no doubt fueled by the appearance of a naked Chun-Li mod at a Street Fighter 6 tournament over the summer.

The introduction of DRM into a decade-plus-old game, at the apparent cost of performance, has, unsurprisingly, outraged players, who took to Revelations’ Steam page and sent his recent reviews declining to a “largely negative” average.

Revelations isn’t the only Capcom game to get the DRM treatment either, it seems. Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection last year swapped Enigma Protector for the previous use of the publisher-popular (and player-unpopular) DRM tool Denuvo, with the recent re-release of Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective also making use of the anti- piracy technology. Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter’s 30th Anniversary Collection will also reportedly be updated with Enigma Protector, although Capcom has yet to confirm any changes themselves.

In the case of Revelations, the apparent performance drop led to Capcom pulling the patch a few days later, attributing the reversal to “an issue observed with the last update” in an Steam Blog. However, they promised that the update would be re-released once the issues were resolved, indicating that they haven’t given up on the war against mods yet.
