The design of the PS5 Pro and plans for an announcement in the first half of September have been leaked.
The impressively knowledgeable Billbil-kun, who made a name for himself on the French deals site Dealabs the very reliable leaking of the monthly PS Plus games over the past two years is the source of this latest scoop. They delve into the overall marketing plan for September and confirm certain elements previously aired by Jeff Grubb on his Game Mess morning podcast, which says a State of Play showcase will take place in late September, likely following the Tokyo Game Show.
However, according to billbil-kun, the announcement of the PS5 Pro is expected earlier in the first half of September.
Another juicy element concerns the design of the console, which… well, it will look like a somewhat glamorous PS5 Slim and PS5. You will still have the expanded collar style, but the paneled parting will have four grooves. Sony will probably notice the four grooves instead of the three stripes in between, so as not to get Adidas’ lawyers excited.
It’s obviously difficult to talk about absolute dimensions from a sketch, but they note that the PS5 Pro looks thicker than the PS5 Slim, which makes sense. However, the multi-panel design is similar in style to the Slim and it is possible that there will be a crossover with compatibility for the interchangeable panels. The added grooves would make the Pro a little longer, and having a little more padding in the sandwich will bring the cooling capacity back closer to the power threshold of the original PS5.
Note that there is no sign of a disc drive in the sketch, and billbil-kun cannot confirm whether the console will have a SKU that offers standard physical media support. However, it’s highly likely that Sony will build in support for the PS5 Slim’s detachable disc drive as a cost-saving measure.
So watch this space for a big PS5 Pro reveal in the next few weeks!
