Mexico’s Summer Surprise: Discover new hotels and cheap food in this underestimated beach city

There have recently been countless travel reports and advice for Mexico, but that does not prevent anyone from venturing south of the border for some pleasure in the sun this summer.

Many travelers miss the magic of Mexico by staying in the most compound bags for a feeling of safety and comfort – you know, Cancun, Los Cabos and people …

But let me tell you, as someone who has been to those 2 powerhouses, as well as Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City, they are always the lesser -known areas of the country that leave me the best memories.

Playas de Tijuana on a beautiful day

By “less known”, that can also be the same as “misunderstood”. That is definitely the case for one of the most underrated beach cities in Mexico.

This huge metropolis is usually more known for pharmacy runs, legendary nightlife and the tradition of dark interruptions, but I have been more than 100 times and never come home with a scratch or story to tell further than PG-Rated Shenanigans.

If you haven’t guessed it yet, yes, we’re talking about it TijuanaAn iconic city that is often misunderstood as a no-go zone, but it is really one of the biggest surprise destinations in Mexico.

Yes, Tijuana is a beach city

Look, I get it. If a San Diegan who likes to go on the beach when I don’t swing articles for you, comparing tijuana apples with apples with San Diego would not feel good-the fact that Tijuana has the same wonderful year round again as much of America is melting in heat waves.

Beach with

But let’s not forget that there is a very controversial “wall” in between, which, right, wrong or indifferent, means how different these 2 cities really are.

Like much of Cabo, it is not advised to take a dip here in the waters, but it is not the powerful waves that you wipe away; It is the lack of infrastructure, which means that waters filled with bacteria are not suitable for swimming.

Just ask Imperial Beach, the southernmost beach city in America opposite the aforementioned ‘Wall’ …

Just as millions of Cabo do not mind without enjoying the spectacular blue waters, the same can be said in Tijuana, only for various reasons and no, there are also no 5-star luxury resorts with a view of the thorning of the border.

Lively Tijuana board on the beach

Call me crazy, but I love visiting the coast of Tijuana, simply known as ‘the Playas’ usually.

It is a whole atmosphere there with coconut sellers, buzzing bars, phenomenal seafood, massages on the beach (no, not those Friendly), and even a flourishing expansion.

But if you prefer swimming waters, the paradisal city of Rosarito feels much more prepared for holidaymakers with resorts on the beach and a city center that feels like a microcosm Cabo.

Just check local reports on water conditions before you jump in.

Tijuanas Always Changing Skyline: New Hotels on the Horizon

Like I said, I’ve been going to Tijuana for years and it seems that every other time I visit a crane, is part of the cityscape is built as a new high -rise.

This time it is not only foreign investors who cast boat loads in cash in condos.

There are some exciting hotels with a name brand that will certainly attract more American visitors if they can just come across the obstacle that Tijuana is safe for tourists.

I am not a crime expert, but a deep dive in local reports almost always includes gang-on-gang crime that rarely affects tourists, even those like me who live 15 minutes away.

The most striking hotel on the Horizon is one 22 -storey Westin set on tower About the corner of Bulevar Agua Caliente.

Although it is a border city, Tijuana is actually quite luxurious, especially away from the expired structures that you immediately greet when entering Mexico.

Parts of the Plaza Rio district feel like polanco in Mexico City with chic cars that looked past, cozy wine bars, Brazilian steakhouses and traditional taco stands.

It is therefore not very surprising that more hotels are popping up to improve the attraction of the city with name brands that we know and that we love.

Downtown is also revived. It still needs some work, but the most popular region of the city is taking a huge step this fall by opening a chic Indigo of the hotel In the heart of the action of the center, only steps removed from Mercado Hidalgo.

It is planned to open November 1, 2025.

There are also numerous new boutique hotels spread over revolucia, sandwiched between bars, restaurants and trinket stores with annoying suppliers that encouraged you to “buy things you don’t need”.

Hungry coming, Happy Leave Happy: Tijuana is the Mecca for cheap food!

Arch on Avenida Revolucion in Tijuana

I’m not a joke, there is always A new restaurant to try in TJ. That is reason Numero Uno why I crossed the border in the first place.

Rarely will you spot the account when it arrives. It does not matter whether the hot dogs in Tijuana style are in Corner Street sellers, hole-in-the-wall taco stands as a renowned Taco Alley, or enjoy $ 1 Coronas at El Toro, options are plentiful.

Circling back to “The Playas”, if you are a seafood lover like me, it is a must of an endless series of oceanside eeties.

You could question the sanitary conditions of slurping raw oysters in a border city, but remember that you can slurice them while you look up where they came from.

Caesars in Tijuana

There are also classics that are a must for every First-Timer, such as Caesar’s, whose claim on fame is the original Caesars salad, and I promise that it is nothing you have ever had before.

Even for a carnivore like me, I was able to order after the round of their tables-peared salad.

Tijuana now has 2 non -stop flights from the US

If you prefer to skip San Diego and fly straight in, travelers can now fly non -stop on American Airlines from Phoenix or Volaris from Las Vegas.

But if you wanted to cross San Diego to San Diego, make sure you benefit from one of the world’s most unique meshes, the Cross Border Xpress.

Think of it as a no-nonsense fast pass to prevent the infamous long border waiting times of Tijuana.
