It’s not unusual for a popular game to get mods, albeit a Donald Trump-themed mod for the recently launched game Marvel Rivals apparently forbidden.
The new mod turned Captain America, one of the characters in the new superhero-themed 6v6 Marvel PVP shooter, into President-elect Donald Trump.
Although the mod has just been released on the most popular modding portal Nexus Mods is now listed as unavailable on the platform. Tons of “nude” mods like Naked squirrel And Naked praying mantis remain available.
No explanation was given for the removal of the Marvel Rivals Donald Trump mod, although it’s possible this was a blanket ban stemming from their far-reaching 2020 policy of banning all politics-related mods. Even if this were the case, it remains confusing how policies in this area are currently enforced.
“This ban will apply to all mods uploaded from September 28 (2020),” Nexus Mods officials said at the time. “We will review this restriction at some point after the next President of the United States is inaugurated.”
The decision to ban all mods related to US politics came just ahead of the highly contentious 2020 presidential election between then-incumbent President Donald Trump and challenger Joe Biden.
At the time, Nexus Mods said the ban was in response to a “wave of provocative and trolling mods uploaded based on current sociopolitical issues in the United States” weeks ahead of the 2020 election.
Even if this is the case for the ban on the Marvel Rivals Donald Trump mod, it was immediately clear at the time that mods that simply bore the likeness of political figures like Donald Trump were allowed. The Marvel Rivals Donald Trump mod is one such mod, so a decision to ban the mod is confusing at best.
Marvel Rivals is now available for Windows PC (via Steam and the Epic games store), Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
