For anyone who doubts the power of manifestation, Lizzy McAlpine may simply be able to reconsider your attitude. In 2021, the singer-songwriter tweeted With her favorite Broadway star: “In case you wonder that my goal is to sing with @jeremymjordan.” (Jordan, for his part, replied: “I am in it.”)
This spring she does exactly that. The 25-year-old Singer-Songwriter-Die first found fame with intensely personal, social media-friendly songs such as “Ceiling“And”Push down and pray—S is currently in the lead against Jordan in a new production of Floyd Collins In Lincoln Center Theater, which marks her Broadway debut.
Days before the opening evening of the show on Monday, McAlpine meets me for chamomile tea in a hotel in the middle. “I have the best time of my life,” she says with a giggle, widening her big green eyes.
During her last year of high school, McAlpine did not apply to university, not for music, but acting. “I was really shy in high school and even the beginning of high school,” she explains. “It took me a while to get out of my shell, and theater helped me with that.” Yet she ended up at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she would write her first album, Give me a minuteAnd meets Philip Etherington, who produced her first two.
“When I got into Berklee, I thought I might have made the wrong decision, but I stayed there,” says McAlpine. “I’m thinking about this all the time. I don’t know where I would be if I would not have stayed.” But now, with a third record – 2024s Older– Under her belt, McAlpine, who once played as a penny pingleton in her high school production of Hair sprayCircles back to her first love.
