Netflix has released the trailer for season 2 of the hit political thriller series ‘The Diplomat’, which will stream worldwide on the platform on October 31.
The upcoming season picks up after the events of the season 1 finale, which ended with a bang – literally – after a bomb was detonated in central London. Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), the American ambassador to Great Britain, tries to find out who is responsible for the bombing. But things change when she discovers that the attack did not come from a rival nation, but from within the British government. According to the official synopsis: “As Kate pursues the truth, her only true ally is her almost ex-husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), very much alive and deeply committed. She faces a fraught marriage, a complex dynamic with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and a looming visit from Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney).
Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear and Ato Essandoh all return for new episodes. Season 2 also introduces new faces, including Oscar-winning actor Allison Janney as Vice President Grace Penn.
Netflix officially announced it would renew the show in March this year after the first season was widely viewed on the platform and debuted on the streamer’s weekly global Top 10 English TV chart. According to one Variety report, just four days after the political thriller series was released, it generated 57.48 million viewing hours and appeared in the Top 10 in 86 countries.
Season 1 earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series – Drama, along with a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for Best Drama Series. Russell was also nominated for an Emmy, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance in the show’s first season.
“The Diplomat” was created by Debora Cahn, writer and executive producer of “Homeland,” and is executive produced by Janice Williams, Russell, Peter Noah and Alex Graves.
