Pebble Beach, California – Scottie Scheffler tried to make homemade ravioli on Christmas Day – with limited equipment in a rental home – when he realized that he had made a serious mistake. He decided to use an empty wine glass to form and cut his pasta.

“I had my hand on top and it broke, what, on the side, I have heard nothing but horror stories since this happened about wine glasses, so be careful,” Scheffler said Tuesday. “Even if you are like me and you don’t drink wine, you really have to be careful with wine glasses.”

The stem of a wine glass stuck Scheffler in the upper palm of his right hand. That is the core of the incident that led to a surgical procedure and the 2024 PGA Tour player of the year from his first two tournaments of the season, the Sentry in Maui and the American Express in Palm Springs.

The number 1 player in the world will make his first tournament start of 2025 this week on the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which starts on Thursday. It comes after a two -week interruption of golf and physical activity, as well as a steadily process to reduce in training and play. That period was frustrating for a player who thrives in competition. Scheffler does not like leaning back and looking.

“It is one of those deals where I was angry with myself immediately after it happened because I was like God, that is so stupid, but you just don’t think about it when you are in the moment,” he continued. “Yes, certainly a bit more careful to do things at home.”

Immediately after the incident a friend of Scheffler who happens to be a surgeon came to the rescue and helped to stop bleeding. The next day rolled around and the wound was no longer open, but the pain remained and Scheffler felt a general lack of motion range. He decided to reach a hand doctor with whom he had worked on a thumb injury while he was at university. They opted for surgery. Scheffler said he did not expect his right hand to exchange damage in the long term.

Scheffler spent his recovery time with reflecting and analyzing a historical season with seven victories on the PGA Tour – most since Tiger Woods won in 2007 – plus an Olympic gold medal and the Hero World Challenge. He watched the film of his tournament rounds again and took his mind back to those cruise control moments in competition, where he watches both his swing positions and attitude.

“There are a few tournaments where I looked back where the thing that stood out was that I never really exaggerated on stuff, I stayed a bit in it and waited a bit at my time to get hot,” Scheffler said.
