Almost every single Rhode beauty product Hailey Bieber launches go viral. The secret sauce? An unmistakable combination of the founder’s influence and her simple approach to developing products that work well (seriously, the Rhode Pocket Blush is – without a doubt – one of my favorite launches this year). Now Bieber is expanding her skincare range (which currently includes the Pineapple Refreshing Cleanser, Frosting milk, Peptide glazing fluid, And Barrier repair cream) with the new one Barrier butter ($38)a thick, multi-purpose moisturizer made to quench the thirstiest skin (i.e. mine), and we’ve got all the details.
The formula
I got to test Barrier Butter a few weeks before launch and can confirm that it’s a super hydrating balm-cream hybrid that doesn’t leave a “dewy” or greasy finish. If you’re looking for the shiny, greasy finish, that you would get if you threw Vaseline or Aquaphor; this isn’t it. Instead, this pumps out like a real thick cream, but quickly melts into the skin like a balm. It has a true satin finish that isn’t overly sticky, so you don’t feel like there’s a peel-off sticker on your pillowcase once you’re lying down.
The ingredients list has a few notable entries, including hyaluronic acid, murumuru butter and ceramides, all of which feature in super-hydrating, ‘barrier-boosting’ skincare. Together they plump the skin and retain moisture, so your skin feels less dry and dull over time.
How to use it
The brand recommends using this at night, after applying your bedtime serums, moisturizer, etc., to capture all the juiciness while leaving your face plump and not too dry when you wake up. You can also massage some of it into larger areas, like your elbows or knees, if necessary some extra moisture. I’ve been applying a bit of this to the backs of my hands and wrists (both of which are usually super dry), and they always feel softer once I rub this on.
My combination skin gets seasonally dry (especially when the radiator is on in my pre-war apartment), so it’s crucial to moisturize my skin before I go to bed, otherwise I wake up with flaky dryness, especially around my chin and mouth . This has been a nice final step in my routine for the past few weeks. I used a generous amount and concentrated it around my chin and mouth before rubbing the rest into my neck and chest. It will stand the true test of time once the New York City winter chill becomes a major factor in the coming weeks.
Final thoughts
As with any skincare product, you’ll want to keep your skin type and preferences in mind before delving into a buttery, thick barrier cream like this one. While drier skin types might love this, you might not love it if you’re usually super oily. But again, this isn’t greasy or sticky at all, so it can feel great on any face that needs some extra love. It’s also completely fragrance-free, which is great if you have sensitivities or strong preferences in that area.
Barrier Butter is available now and it’s the first Rhode skincare product to come in two sizes: a 1.35 oz tube ($22) to throw in your purse, nightstand, etc. and an “on-the-go” tube ($22) to keep in your purse, nightstand, etc. shelf” 5 oz. ($38) tube that can go in your medicine cabinet so you always have a little hydration boost when/if you need it.
