Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) provided more details Monday about why he dismissed Donald Trump, running mate JD Vance and other Republican figures as “weird.”
“This observation of weird came from people I know – my friends, my relatives, Republicans, some of them – that this is just awkward. They are clumsy,” he said, adding that Republican figures are pursuing an agenda that no one wants.
“Who asks for this crazy stuff?” he said. “Who is asking to increase the price of insulin? Who is asking for the abolition of contraception?”
Walz, who is reportedly on Vice President Kamala Harris’ short list for vice president, said it is difficult to imagine what Trump and other Republican figures do in their private lives.
“I said Donald Trump is trying to mock Vice President Harris because he’s smiling,” Walz told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki. “And I made the point: you never see this man smile. You never see him doing these normal things.
Republicans have often attacked Harris for her laugh, with Trump mockingly calling her “laffin’ Kamala.”
Walz gave another example of something normal that you can’t imagine Trump doing.
“Imagine when I go home at night, I pick up the Frisbee and throw it and my dog catches it. He comes over and gets a belly rub because he’s a good boy,” he said. “Imagine these guys doing stuff like that. They just can’t do that.”
He said the message is that Democratic candidates understand where ordinary people are coming from — and what they need to move on with their lives.
