Bungie’s first new project since Destiny, Marathon is a PVPVE team-based extraction shooter that takes place on the planet Tau Ceti IV. Players will inhabit the bodies of cybernetic mercenaries known as runners who can survive the hard environment of the planet while looking for the abandoned colony and the surrounding planet for loot, including new weapons and equipment.
It takes what feels like rather loose inspiration by Bungie’s FPS from 1994, Marathon, an early counterpart from Doom who was exclusive to Mac before spreading to PC with his continuation. The first game was put on board a colonie ship that was attacked by the S’Pht and PFHOR -Buitenaarde races, while the AI received sentiment from the ship through a process known as a disaster thesis – a theme that continued to the Halo series. The sequelers went to other planets in the universe, delve into time travel and alternative realities.
But don’t expect that story to be told in the same way through this new game – at least you can play the originals for free. Back in the unveiling of the game in 2023, Game director Christopher Barrett said:
“Marathon has been designed as a PVP-oriented game from the start and will not have a campaign with one player. Instead, we create with the PVP experience as our foundation for player-driven stories to unfold, stories that are integrated with the umbrella game story. are affected on all sides.
There is a lot on marathon for the Bungie team, after difficulties with which they have confronted Destiny in the last years. That seemed that it endangered the company’s pseudo-independence, after the acquisition by Sony. With Bungie still to really switch off where Destiny can go in the future, now that the ten-year main story has been packed, and with live service games that are now far from a safe gamble-see-so-see is suicide team and Concord last year this gameplay is a big problem.
