Final Fantasy 7 by Apex Legends crossover kicks off tomorrow, but players are frustrated about expensive cosmetics and the possible use of AI in the event’s advertising.

Starting tomorrow, you’ll be able to pick up some pretty cool looking Final Fantasy 7-themed cosmetics in Apex Legends, the game’s first collaboration event with another IP, naturally following the release of Rebirth in February. This latest event has 36 new items that you can pick up through event packs, i.e. loot boxes, which also include six “Iconic” skins. Like most lootbox items, you can’t buy them right away.

Normally events also include an heirloom that you unlock after getting everything else available, which can cost you around $160, at least in most previous events. This time, however, the Heirloom, a skin similar to the iconic Buster Sword, is available in the event packs. As some fans have elaboratedyou will probably have to buy at least 36 packs, which amounts to at least $360, because the chance of getting the skin is so low that you have to buy that many packs (thanks GameRadar).

There’s actually a unique item you won’t get until you buy all 36 items, a One-Winged Angel themed Death Box, which means you’ll probably have to spend quite a bit of money to get away from the event with access to the skin. One user on TikTok even went so far make a list of all the things you could buy instead of all those event packages, like a Nintendo Switch, or a few therapy sessions.

Plus, so is Respawn facing criticism over alleged use of AI in the trailer for the collaboration event. You can see that some of the character designs look a little off upon closer inspection, although some suggest that they were just images from the game put through some sort of AI filter, rather than being outright AI-generated. Anyway, a bit of a shame because the use of AI is a growing trend in tech spaces that honestly just insults the hard work of countless artists. Maybe let’s not rip off players and use technology that undermines artists, will we be EA executives?
