Yellow Brick Games has announced that an Eternal Strands demo will be coming to PC via Steam on January 21, giving a taste of their magic-infused action-adventure game a week before its full release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on January 28 – it’s also day one for certain tiers of Game Pass.
However, there is no word yet whether a demo will also come to the console the team responded to a question about this by saying “Steam only for the moment”, implying that this is a possibility.
Eternal Strands will cast players as Brynn, a young Weaver who seeks to restore the cultural home of her people and battle enemies with a mix of magical abilities and weapons. At the heart of this, however, is a thermodynamic layer woven throughout the game world, allowing the elemental use of fire and ice to be applied to the environment to great effect.
The heat will spread, the cold will cool, and there will be real-time destruction that goes hand in hand with telekinetic powers. For example, you can set a tree on fire, then rip it out of the ground and throw it at enemies using Brynn’s telekinesis. You can also cast a magical wall of ice to block incoming attacks, or infuse her sword with flames to fly at enemies.
Brynn is also inherently mobile, allowing her to take on gigantic enemies that you must climb, shatter armor to expose weak spots, freeze to limit mobility, burn to remove fur, and more to defeat . Of course, the magic will also be useful in navigating the fantasy city.
It’s all a rather intriguing added layer to the action-adventure formula, bringing more interactivity and emergent reactivity into the game. Definitely one to keep an eye on later this month, as one of the first game releases of the year.
