Eight weeks of 2024 N.F.L the regular season is in the books. That means we are quickly approaching the middle of the fall calendar. And with it, the trade deadline during the season.
Here’s everything you need to know:
What is the N.F.L trade deadline?
It’s the official cutoff for all transactions between teams until the official start of the 2025 offseason (March 12). After the deadline, players can only be added via free agency, waivers or practice squad signings.
When is the deadline?
The deadline is 4:00 PM ET on Tuesday, November 5that is between weeks 9 and 10 according to the regular season schedule. This is a week later than normal, because the N.F.L previously held on the Tuesday after week 8 of 2012-2023. Previously, the deadline was even earlier, namely on the Tuesday after week 6.
Do deadline deals actually occur?
Absolute! In fact, several major events have already occurred this year. It’s not quite N.B.A– or activity at the MLB level, but the N.F.L has seen an uptick in big-name movement over the past decade, arguably due to both adjusted deadlines and an influx of aggressive general managers. Pro Bowlers acquired around recent deadlines include Davante Adams (2024), Amari Cooper (2024, 2018), DeAndre Hopkins (2024), Diontae Johnson (2024), Christian McCaffrey (2022), Emmanuel Sanders (2019), TJ Hockenson (2022) , Montez Sweat (2023), Roquan Smith (2022), Von Miller (2021), Jalen Ramsey (2019) and Stephon Gilmore (2021).

Which teams can be buyers and sellers?
Potential buyers
USATSI
- Detroit Lions: A year after reaching the NFC title game, they still look like perhaps the most dangerous team in the league when firing on all cylinders. However, losing star pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson to injury could prompt them to seek emergency help. Their division is also packed.
- Minnesota Vikings: No one expected them to start 5-2, and yet the NFC North is suddenly full of potential playoff contenders. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, meanwhile, is no stranger to a seasonal explosion, with TJ Hockenson joining from the rival Detroit Lions in 2022.
Potential sellers
USATSI
- Carolina Panthers: The Andy Dalton spark is now completely gone; Regardless of who is under center, they have work to do to become relevant again. And on 1-7, with the entire infrastructure having to be restarted, there is hardly a better time to auction off valuable assets.
- Jacksonville Jaguars: Every week seems to bring a new level of crisis here. They’ve shown more fight lately, but now Doug Pederson-Trevor Lawrence’s team has beaten up all three of the club’s top wide receivers. It’s entirely possible that the Jaguars are approaching the deadline at 2-7.
- New England Patriots: They probably don’t want to completely strip down the supporting cast of new quarterback Drake Maye, but is there actually that much to unpack? With a new coach and general manager, the first priority, besides developing Maye, should be collecting picks to build around him.
