Retro Anime

For anime fans who wonder why they think a newer anime with 20 words in its name, it seems boring or soulless, it’s time to dive into the roots of the medium.

Let me convince me why these ten anime classics, which include different genres, are absolutely essential for newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts.

1. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (4 episode OVA | 1998 – 2003) by Hitoshi Ashinano

Alpha at work in itself called café.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (simply) takes place in a post-apocalyptic world and offers a serene exploration of life through the experiences of Alpha, a robot that provides her self-name café.

The reflective tone, beautiful landscapes and quiet atmosphere make it a perfect anime to enjoy if you want to relax and forget everything of the day.

2. Record of Lodoss War (13 episode OVA | 1990) by Ryo Mizuno

DOOTLIT (Left) shows Parn (right) a hint of concern.

Inspired by Ryo Mizuno’s repetition of Dungeons and Dragons, Record of Lodoss War follows the adventures of Parn, Doelit and their allies while fighting for peace under nations and investigating emerging dark forces that are aimed at causing damage and despair.

This classic series with swords, sorcery and cute elves, Lodoss War offers something for every type of anime fan and cannot be missed.

3. Spirit of Wonder: Miss China’s Ring (1 episode Ova | 1992) by Kenji Tsuruta

Miss China fills beer for customers in her restaurant.

This charming short OVA supplies romance and science fiction, aimed at Miss China (whose name that we never really discover), owner of her own bar/restaurant, and her ecstatic but friendly love interest.

His Steampunk-like aesthetics and attention draw the story perfectly encapsulating of realism and the summary of the world of the Manga of Tsuruta.

4. Gunsmith Cats (3 episode Ova | 1995 – 1996) by Kenichi Sonoda

Irene “Rally” Vincent (left) and “Minnie” May Hopkins (right)

Do you like action, babes and excitement? Then this series is for you. Gunsmith Cats follows bodies Irene “Rally” Vincent and “Minnie” May Hopkins while fighting crime in the streets of the criminal underworld of Chicago.

Gun enthusiasts will like to see how many firearms can be recognized because of their anxiously accurate display and attention to detail. With a mix of crazy car agents, very sympathetic leads and non-stop explosions, it is a fantastic tribute to films from the 80s/90s.

5. Dragon’s Heaven (1 episode OVA | 1988) by Makoto Kobayashi

Shahan (left) tower high high above Ikuru (right).

These beautiful eggs combine Mecha with fantasy and frankly shows some of the best hand -drawn animation I have ever seen in an anime. What really distinguishes it from the rest is the unique art style that is very heavily inspired by the artwork of the famous French artist Jean Giraud (Aka Moebius).

The story shows a conscious Mech called Shaian and a lonely female warrior called Ikuru who forms a short but fulfilling alliance against a common enemy. Presenting Mecha designs that would compete even the hardcore Eva and Macross fans, it is a miracle that I think that every anime and art lover must look at least once.

6. Tamala 2020: A Punk Cat in Space (Anime Film | 2002) by Tol (“Trees of Life”)

Tamala leaves her dystopia of a city to pursue a better life.

Rast out of insane and thinking, this initially one-off film follows Tamala, a cat with a punk posture (hence the title), while she leaves her birthplace on a search for life to find somewhere else, somewhere they might someone are just someone like them.

With surreal animation and social commentary on the nose, it is a film that even non-anime fans can enjoy and laugh.

7. Gunbuster (6 episode OVA | 1988 – 1989) by Toshio Okada

The original “girls in Giant Mechs” show.

From GAINAX and the directorial debut of Hideki Anno (you know, the Evangelion Guy), combines this iconic mecha series elements of space opera, drama and intense conflict in an emotionally moving but satisfactory story.

The story of Noriko Takaya’s journey of a timid but determined pilot in a hero who defends humanity is both Rad and inspiring.

8. Slayers (104 episode television series | 1989 – 2009) by Hajime Kanzaka

Lina (left) and gourry (rear) while they escape an angry crowd.

If you have viewed a record of Lodoss war and thought: “You know, I wish there was much more humor,” then this anime is for you.

This series focuses on Lina Inverse, a powerful but inadequate (and self -aware) sorceress, together with its reliable but sometimes stupid companions. A mix of humor, magical fighting and a travel feeling, Murderer Remains a beloved franchise for his lighthearness, attractive characters and compelling stories.

9. Devilman: The Birth (2 episode OVA | 1987 – 1990) by Go Nagai

Nothing special will certainly happen with these angels .. right?

GA Nagai’s Devilman: The Birth OvA (eggs 1 of 2) brings the dark, brutal and disgusting world of demons to life. Birth Serves as a spooky introduction (especially if you are some experience with the anime TV series from the 70s) to Akira Fudos disturbingly bad alter-ego Devilman.

Demonstrations, demonstrations, limbs are torn and even moments of grief, Devilman: The Birth is the perfect entrance of the classic series by Go Nagai.

10. Kimagure Orange Road (48 episode television series | 1987 – 1988) by Izumi Matsumoto

The typical anime love triangle.

An iconic romantic comedy, this series follows the Kyosuke Kasuga (who, by the way, is psychologically together with his two sisters and father) while trying to juggle a love triangle with the soldered Madoka and her best friend, the ever -every but delicious hikaru.

If there was once an anime who shouted the aesthetics of the 1980s, it would undoubtedly be Kimagure Orange Road. Madoka himself was the founder of the Tsunder Archetype (Sorry Asuka, you lose it).

Why Retro Anime matters

Without retro -anime we had never had such modern classics as Frost And Higurashi; It delivers an Aethestic that I can’t even start describing perfectly without taking at least 4 hours of your valuable time. That classic look and technology of animated on cells will never be updated in my honest opinion. But what do I know? I am just a random guy who still types articles for the internet.

Whether it is the natural and calming beauty of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou or the bat-shit insane gore of Devilman: The BirthThese ten anime -oas/TV series are proof of the always timeless attraction of retro -anime. Grab what Dunkoossome Golf Soda, becomes comfortable and turn on the little CRT that you still have in one way or another in your parents’ basement and prepare for absolute kino.
